All About Berries

Fruit is wonderful treat to consume, and one of the best fruits available are berries. Unfortunately, these can get pretty expensive if you are purchasing them from a supermarket. Instead of buying your berries this year, perhaps you should consider growing them yourself. There are quite a few benefits to do this, and it is a simple task.

Growing your own berries allows you to save money. Seeds can be bought at a very affordable price, as can other tools that you will need such as soil. This may not seem true at first, but if you add up how much money you spend on berries in a given year, and then compare that number to how much the tools will be – you will be pleasantly surprised.

In addition, growing berries is actually a simple activity to do. They are by far one of the easiest plants to plant and maintain, so it will not be difficult to get the berries you want. Growing berries does not require as much space as other fruits or vegetables would require, such as pumpkins. With some types of berries such as blueberries, you can even plant them in small containers.

Before planting your seeds, you are going to want to determine which area is the best. It is recommended that you use a full sun area or partly sun area, but never use a shaded location. Next, dig a hole and place a few seeds in to it. Ensure you are spacing the seeds out in an efficient manner – usually two feet apart and seven feet apart from the next row. This will give the berries enough room to grow and expand.

Keep in mind that you will need to water them right after they are planted, and then each and every day. If it rains quite a bit where you live, let the rain take care of it. As long as the soil is moist, they should grow well.

As the sun hits them, they will continue to grow each day. First with small branches and stems, then leaves, and finally the berries will show up. Always remember that just because the berries are there does not mean the berries are ready. Once the berry has color in it, it has ripened. This color can vary from berry to berry. For example, a blueberry will turn a dark blue when it is ready to be picked, whereas a blackberry will turn a deep black.

Once they have turned these colors, go ahead and pick them. Ensure you wash them thoroughly before eating any of them, and throw out any that do not look good. You can eat these berries by themselves, make a berry pie, sauce, other terrific food.

By planting your own berries, you will be able to save on money and impress your friends and family. Not only that, but you will be impressed with yourself. It is amazing how much pride you feel when you accomplish such a task, as you have become completely self-sufficient.
